چکیده

Clustered multimedia servers, consisting of interconnected nodes and disks, have been proposed for large scale servers, that are capable of supporting multiple concurrent streams which access the video objects stored in the server. As the number of disks and nodes in the cluster increases, so does the probability of a failure. With data striped across all disks in a cluster, the failure of a single disk or node results in the disruption of many or all streams in the system. Guaranteeing high availability in such a cluster becomes a primary requirement to ensure continuous service. In this paper, we study mirroring and software RAID schemes with di erent placement strategies, that guarantee high availability in the event of disk and node failures, while satisfying the real-time requirements of the streams. We examine various declustering techniques for spreading the redundant information across disks and nodes and show that random declustering has good real-time performance. Finally, we compare the overall cost per stream for di erent system con gurations. We derive the parameter space where mirroring and software RAID apply, and determine optimal parity group sizes.

Analysis and Modeling of VoIP Servers: A Linear Programming Approach

The SIP protocol was standardized by the IETF at the application layer for initiating, managing, and terminating multimedia sessions and has been widely used as the main signaling protocol on both the Internet and VoIP networks. Most challenges in this protocol are overload and lack of proper state distribution. These challenges cause a wide range of next-generation network users to face a shar...

Clustered Multimedia Servers: Architectures and Storage Systems

This paper presents an overview of the recent advances on the design of clustered multimedia servers. It is focused on the following aspects: server architecture, media data organization, real-time stream scheduling and admission control algorithms. For the architecture, we give a taxonomy regarding the various structures of cluster components, and survey over 20 existing server systems, either...

Design and Performance Tradeoffs in Clustered Video Servers

In this paper, we investigate the suitability of clustered architectures for designing scalable multimedia servers. Specifically, we evaluate the effects of: (i) architectural design of the cluster, (ii) the size of the unit of data interleaving, and (iii) read-ahead buffering and scheduling on the real-time performance guarantees provided by the server. To analyze the effects of these paramete...
